I’m Guyun Lu, a member of the class of 2027 with an intended major in data science and a strong commitment to social issues. Over the past year, I’ve noticed troubling patterns on campus. Some students have posted hostile comments on WeChat Moments targeting feminism and LGBTQ+ topics, and similar incidents have happened at Duke, where offensive and discriminative messages were directed at Black students. Discussing these issues with friends, I’ve sensed doubts about our ability to address them effectively. Many feel that reporting procedures may be ineffective, fearing that offenders might hide their views rather than change. This has motivated me to join the Student Leadership Board, where I hope to advocate for a more respectful, inclusive campus. Additionally, as a data science major, I bring a unique perspective. From what I have observed, many students in my Division of Natural and Applied Science are less likely to engage in community issues, creating a gap in representation. In a division that especially needs diversity, equity, and inclusion because of historical and still existing stereotypes, I am committed to helping bridge this gap and advocating for students who may face stereotypes and discrimination. For example, some female students in STEM here at DKU have shared concerns about stereotypes still existing here at DKU, suggesting that STEM fields are “too difficult” for women, yet how to tackle with this problems are still vague to them. Chizuko Ueno’s last year speech highlighted our lack of clear procedures for handling discrimination and harassment complaints, underscoring the need for better awareness and practical solutions. I want to bring these concerns to the board and work to make the reporting process more accessible and effective. If given the opportunity, I would strive to help foster a campus environment that values open dialogue and respect for all students.
