My Day as a 2026 DIF Volunteer

The forum had not yet begun, but everything was already in motion.

On the day prior, the hotel check-in team supported arriving guests, assisting with accommodation and ensuring everything was in place for the following day.

“What seemed like simple check-in tasks became more demanding on identifying and communicating when guests arrived at once.”

As the day turned, the forum officially began.

Early in the morning at Duke Kunshan University’s Comunity Center, volunteers were already in position.

Lines began to form at the registration desk, and the corridors gradually filled with guests. A high-profile forum unfolded, steadily and in order.

This is the moment that the forum is on a fast track.

Across different corners of the venue, volunteers took on different roles — welcoming early arrivals, guiding directions, maintaining order in the theatre, and quietly double-checking details behind the scenes.

These efforts were not always visible, but they made everything run smoothly.

“Timekeeping was a largely invisible but critical task. When the schedule didn’t fully align with what was happening on site, it required constant attention and real-time judgement to keep everything running smoothly.”

Across different corners of the venue, everything was in motion — quietly, but precisely.

As sessions progressed, transitions overlapped, and guest movements intersected, what truly mattered was not always having the answer, but knowing how to respond to uncertainty.

“During the reception, I adjusted my approach based on the guest’s preferences. After aligning on the schedule in advance, I shifted to following up online, ensuring necessary support while maintaining appropriate boundaries.”

—— Siying Wang|Reception Volunteer

Not guessing, not overstepping, confirming when unsure, and reaching the right person at the right time — these seemingly simple decisions formed the backbone of order on site.

Professionalism is often quiet, but always visible.

During DIF, volunteers were not merely assisting — they were active participants in a real-world operation.

Across different roles, each took responsibility for their part while staying connected within a larger system, enabling a complex event to run seamlessly.

“Guiding was not only about delivering information, but also about listening to the audience and adapting our communication accordingly.

This experience led me to rethink the relationship between humans and the environment, and made me realize that communication itself can shape understanding.”

“These small details during volunteering were key to keeping everything running smoothly.”

This was also a form of learning beyond the classroom:

Making decisions amid uncertainty, building trust through collaboration, and demonstrating responsibility through attention to detail.

As the forum came to a close and guests departed, the venue gradually returned to calm.

Those who moved quietly throughout the day, sustaining the operation, may not all be remembered individually — but their presence made the event even brighter.
