Employment Opportunities

Residence Life offers a number of roles for full time, intern, and student workers.  Each position has it’s own recruitment process, so we encourage you to take a look at the information below and we hope you won’t hesitate to reach out to us or those in these roles to learn more about them.

The Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) role is a 12-month, full-time, live-in employee responsible for creating opportunities to live, learn, and lead in their assigned residence hall. They are charged to help create a safe, diverse, inclusive, stimulating, and vibrant living and learning community. Responsibilities will expand in scope and depth as DKU grows in size and complexity, but will always include overseeing the community development of a residence hall, adjudication of student conduct cases, student of concern follow up and referral, supervision of student staff, campus duty coverage and crisis response, and residence hall finance and facilities management. Programmatic leadership responsibilities may include office email account management, occupancy management, assessment initiatives, living learning program development, faculty-in-residence program development, student staff recruitment and hiring, student staff training, and residential-based student leadership opportunity development.

Resident Assistants (RAs) are upperclass undergraduate or graduate students whose role is to help residents be at home while living in our residence halls by creating opportunities to live, learn, and lead. To assist in residents’ academic and social integration at DKU, RAs host many events intended to extend learning beyond the classroom, enhance a sense of belonging in their area, and encourage self-discovery. RAs are role model student leaders who also take the time to get to know and promote their individual residents’ growth and development. They represent the depth and breadth of diversity in our student body. Additionally, RAs serve in a critical after-hours “on duty” capacity where they respond to different inconveniences, emergencies, and crises.

Office Assistants (OAs) are students whose role is to assist Residence Life operations. Most of the work is completing different administrative tasks assigned by Residence Life professional staff, at the Residence Life office front desk. In the past, tasks have included flier making, email answering, photo taking, video promotion help, file sorting, survey creating, public area inspections, organizing and inventorying departmental property, contributing written pieces for the Student Experience newsletter, etc.

Learning Community Assistants (LCA) serve as the student leaders of the Living & Learning Communities (LLC). They are experts in the fields of their LLCs and fill the community with peer support. They are committed to community building, which includes but is not limited to organizing academic and social events and helping with students’ academic concerns during office hours. They get the chance to write their own stories at DKU and shape fellow students’ living and learning experiences.

Duty Assistants (DAs) are students whose role is to help Resident Assistants with the Resident Assistant on Duty responsibilities. DAs serve in a critical after-hours “on duty” capacity where they respond to different inconveniences, emergencies, and crises. They will hold a residence hall duty phone and respond to calls for the duration of their shift, which lasts from 5:30 PM – 9:00 AM next day during the week, and 5:30 PM – 5:30 PM next day on weekends and holidays. Additionally, they’ll be responsible for completing entire building walkthroughs, called rounds, during each shift. Lastly, they are responsible for observing and addressing all safety and security concerns as well as potential policy violations.

A5 Assistants (A5As) aims to create a safe, social atmosphere and inspirational space for students in the Talent Apartments A5 student center. Moreover, A5As will assist Residence Life in different projects, with a focus on media production (e.g., website and flier design, social media campaigns, video production, etc.). The role is designed for those ready to serve their community and eager to learn new skills.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are a number of different ways you can volunteer your time and talents to your residential community!  If you’re interested in volunteering, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your RA, your RLC, or Residence Life at residencelife@dukekunshan.edu.cn.

Hall-lympics is a semester-long series of monthly events, where residents from different residence halls compete as a team against other residence hall teams, to earn points towards the Hall-lympics Cup.  The Hall-lympics Cup is awarded to the residence hall with the most points at the end of each semester, and it’s proudly displayed in the residence hall’s lobby.

Residence Life periodically offers a call to students to get involved in the development of various departmental programs.  We’re looking for students interested and able to offer constructive feedback and contribute effort to enhancing our services and educational offerings.  In the past, students have assisted with improvements to the room assignments process, the development of Living Learning Communities, and more.
