I’m Annie Zhao, a current DKU junior studying global health and public policy with a particular interest in community welfare. I’m also an American born Chinese from New York, and I’m multilingual! Last year, I refounded the Intercultural Book Club from Professor Austin Woerner. I’ve also held many roles as a social media content creator in my high school and at DKU and worked to create promotional content and increase follower engagement. Additionally, I was a part of the Youth Task Force in Westchester, and held speaking/presenter roles on substance abuse and awareness. During the pandemic, I helped to organize a rally for Asian American Hate. Lastly, community service is also something I value. In total, I currently have over 400 hours of community service from working at my hometown’s local library’s kid section, and tutoring underprivileged students in English, Math and public speaking with non-profits. All in all, leadership is not foreign to me and my strong passion for engaging and advocating for my community is what drives me to apply for the Student Leaders Board. I am so excited for DKU to have this opportunity on campus as I know it can better the student experience. In my time at DKU I, myself, have needed to advocate to get academic/personal needs met and this is a commonly tedious experience for many students. I, truly, care for the DKU community and hope that as a part of SLB I can be the voice for students to reach the people they need, and overall foster an enriching four years. Especially in its first year, SLB will need strong leaders to set the tone, and I aspire to be one of them to continue building DKU’s legacy.
I’m Wanlin Bai, and I would like to run for SLB co-chair. This is my favorite quote by John C. Maxwell, and it captures the essence of the leadership that I am striving to practice. Knowing the way: From the change in the pandemic to the opening of the Phase II campus, I have experienced firsthand the transformation of DKU and understand the challenges and opportunities that come with our diverse student body, including adapting to a new culture, navigating a rigorous academic schedule, and balancing personal well-being. I am committed to helping my peers bridge these gaps. Going the way: As a former student union president and Millennium Fellow, I have developed the negotiation, collaboration, and organizational skills necessary for leadership. Furthermore, through active interaction with students, teachers and faculties, I get to establish a deeper perception in respecting, understanding and balancing diversity. In addition, I actively try to reflect students’ needs, from increasing food options in the canteen to providing more opportunities to engage with Chinese culture, I roll up my sleeves to take action to improve this campus. Showing the way: Being a part of SLB is important to me because it allows me to be a leader and create positive change. It gives me the opportunity to be an advocate for the issues that I have identified and to address the needs of our diverse student body. By being a part of the Student Leadership Board, I hope to continue to lead in a way that is inclusive, engaging, and supportive. I want to build DKU into a place where everyone can plant seeds of dreams, receive appropriate guidance and resources, and harvest a bright future.
