Who am I? A caring sister, a loving friend, a dedicated entrepreneur, and an avid equestrian, among many other things. But at the core of it all, what truly defines me is my passion. It’s the driving force behind everything I do and everything I am. And it is my passion that drove me to apply for the Student Leaders Board. This opportunity is an endeavor I extremely value as it reminds me of the reason I chose to study at Duke Kunshan University despite the risks. I am here because I saw the unique value and potential DKU holds, I knew the moment I stepped foot on campus that with the right leadership and vision, DKU can become a hub for pioneers and dreamers. Having been here for almost two years and as one of two international students from my region, I have observed and identified many good things about DKU, but I also realized the things this school is missing. I aim to lead with respect to values like inclusivity, pluralism and transparency. Moreover, I would like to focus on creating more opportunities for students with diverse interests to begin making a positive impact on the world today, embodying rooted global citizenship. I envision transforming our university into a space run by students, for students to ensure the presence of something for everyone. This won’t be my first time working on the executive board of a non-profit organization which is why I am positive I can contribute to the growth of our diverse community.
“Love and beauty are the realest things I can feel on this planet.” This verse is both my favorite and my life’s guiding motto. To me, love is the force that drives the world—a world shaped by meaning and joy. I learned this truth through my experiences growing up in a diverse neighborhood—where people from Korea, Japan, Germany, and China all shared the same fundamental understanding of love. Though we speak different languages, empathy bridges our hearts, uniting us in ways words cannot express. Looking back, the love and kindness I’ve received become the source of my strength, motivating me to pass it on—especially through leadership. Leadership, I’ve found, is paradoxical: you stand at the front yet carry everyone in your heart; you know about people’s past and devote your time for their future— this should always be the goal and action of every good leader. From interviewing professors and alumni and wrote about their stories to becoming the captain of the varsity team, from working in the Communication Center to designing and organizing field trips for students, here in DKU, I learned about how to become a better listener and storyteller, an observer and problem-solver, with creativity and empathy. Having witnessed the great potential in this magical campus, I believe this is somewhere that every voice will be heard, every dream respected, and every person supported; I believe this is somewhere that we can truly become global and rooted citizens, rooted in our homelands yet embracing the world; I believe this is somewhere that we will always feel at home of, where we can huge each other like families without any concern, and love is the currency that circulates. These are my beliefs, and I am always ready to fight for them!
