Class of 2028

Global-minded leader, innovator, and advocate for youth empowerment and collaboration.

My name is Yahya Bajja, and I am a first-year student in the Class of 2028 at Duke Kunshan University, majoring in Institutions and Governance. Having grown up in Morocco, I have always been inspired by the power of leadership to drive change and create opportunities. As someone who has founded and led organizations that empower youth, managed student activities in diverse settings, and represented peers on international platforms, I thrive in collaborative environments where ideas become actions. My journey has instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to lead with purpose, empathy, and inclusivity. I am applying to the Student Leaders Board because I believe that leadership at DKU should reflect the innovative and dynamic spirit of our community. This inaugural cohort represents a unique opportunity to shape a structure that will serve as a foundation for years to come. I want to be part of this historic moment, contributing my skills and experiences to ensure the Board fosters representation, transparency, and meaningful student engagement. If selected, I aim to focus on three key areas: fostering inclusivity, empowering student initiatives, and enhancing communication between students and administration. I want to create an environment where every student feels their voice matters, regardless of their background or experience. By streamlining processes for student-led projects and ensuring that concerns and ideas are effectively communicated, I believe we can unlock the full potential of our community. Above all, I want to lead by example, creating a culture of collaboration and respect that inspires others to contribute their best. Serving on the Student Leaders Board would not just be an honor but a responsibility I am eager to embrace with dedication and vision. Together, we can lay the groundwork for a legacy of impactful leadership.

Class of 2027

Energetic and versatile scholar-athlete seeking to build bridges.

My name is Xiaoyi Zhu, though I prefer Taylord. I am a pianist, an artist, a student-athlete, a writer, a bridge builder. I was a student with a foot in two worlds, having studied in the U.S. for high school and having prepared for Gaokao in China. My experience has equipped me with a unique blend of adaptability, leadership, and a relentless drive for justice. I am applying for the co-chair of the Student Leaders Board since I always believe in the power of unity and the significance of representing diverse voices. My primary goal is to foster an inclusive environment where every single student feels heard and valued. I aim to initiate programs that bridge cultural gaps and promote academic connections, leveraging my bilingual and bicultural background to ensure that initiatives are sensitive to the needs of students from all culture backgrounds and my leadership skills to create a more unified student body. As a varsity athlete and a member of multiple teams & organizations, I’ve honed my competence to lead by example, fostering teamwork and driving collective success. My vision includes enhancing communication between students of different cultures, organizing events that celebrate our community’s diversity and advocating to work on creating a harmonious platform where students can share their experiences and learn from one another, thereby enriching our educational journey. With my background in sports, music and literature, I am confident in my ability to engage and inspire my peers, driving us towards a more cohesive and vibrant student community. As chair, I ultimately aim to implement initiatives that bridge cultural divides and eliminate injustice and discrimination by advising and punishing. My leadership will be defined by active listening and practical problem-solving, ensuring that the board’s actions reflect the student body’s needs.
